Yoga retreat in Switzerland: how to choose the right one

Switzerland has yoga retreats in hotels, monasteries, seminar centres and on alpine pastures. The photos often look alike — the weekends do not. This checklist helps you compare offers before you commit.

1. The venue: a hotel or a place for retreat?

Many offers take place in wellness hotels that rent out a seminar room. That can be comfortable, but everyday life stays close: other guests, a bar, a TV. Seminar centres and houses built for retreat have a different rhythm — simpler, quieter, often with their own meditation room.

Ask yourself: do I want comfort and a spa, or quiet and nature? Both are fine, but they are two different weekends.

2. The teacher

A retreat stands or falls with the person leading it. Serious organisers name the teacher, their background and the teaching language. Check whether experience is described concretely (years of practice, places, focus) or only in buzzwords.

At Yoga Escape the teacher is Regina Rainskaya. She has practised and taught yoga for more than twenty years, has meditated since the age of twelve and studied philosophy. More on our About page.

3. The programme

A good retreat programme has a clear arc: arriving, deepening, integrating. Look at the daily schedule. How many hours of practice are there each day? Is there free time? What is optional and costs extra?

  • Morning practice (meditation, yoga) before breakfast
  • A longer late-morning block (e.g. a hike or workshop)
  • Rest in the afternoon
  • Evening practice and a quiet close to the day

4. Teaching language

Retreats in Switzerland are held in German, English, French or Italian. Check which language the sessions are actually taught in. Ours are in English; the organiser also speaks Ukrainian and Russian.

5. Group size and minimum numbers

Small groups allow more attention for each person. Many retreats have a minimum number of participants. What matters is what happens if it is not reached: is the full amount refunded? By when is it decided? Book your travel only once the retreat is confirmed.

6. Price: what is really included?

Compare not just the number but the content: nights, meals (from which meal to which?), sessions, excursions, ceremonies. The price often depends on room occupancy. Extras such as ceremonies, tourist tax or drinks should be stated clearly.

7. Payment and cancellation

Read the terms before you book. When is payment due? How much do you get back if you have to cancel? Cancellation insurance can make sense — insurance is usually the participant's own responsibility.

8. Getting there

Most Swiss retreat venues can be reached by public transport. Plan the last leg: PostBus, a walk, a pick-up? In winter, mountain roads may require winter tyres or snow chains. Timetables are on the SBB website.

Our retreats at a glance

We run a few retreats a year: in November at the Schweibenalp above Lake Brienz, and at the start of the year at Hotel Balance in Valais. All dates are on the retreats overview.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a first yoga retreat be?

A weekend with two nights is a good start: long enough to arrive, short enough not to need days off.

When should I book my travel?

Only once the retreat is confirmed, i.e. when the minimum number of participants has been reached. The cut-off date is in the terms.

Do I need insurance?

Insurance is the participant's responsibility. Check health, accident and cancellation insurance before you book.
